Wth is going on with the D on opening drives

Clearly opponents are seeing something. If they have a half way competitant QB we get burned deep and start the game down by 7. Then the D in most games starts to show up and is anywhere from dominant to satisfactory.

Who's the film nerd in our sub that can shed some light on this?

Or is this just recent bias in my mind?
