Wrought iron bars on doors and windows?

I apologize if this is a stupid question.

We’re moving to Houston (from out of state) in a few weeks and as I look at rental houses I keep seeing so many with wrought iron bars on the windows and doors. Are these houses as a rule in less family friendly areas? Or is this just a Texas cultural/style thing?
