Wondering what you guys think about this offseason Hypothetical involving Shane Steichen and Will Anderson Jr.
After the Texans embarrassing loss to the Dolphins yesterday I found myself thinking about changes the organization could make this offseason one scenario I came up with is a little out of the box but I personally think it’s one of the best routes the Texans could go and I want to know your guys’ opinion on it.
- Have the first overall pick – This feels like a guarantee
- Fire Lovie Smith – The only reason I could see the Texans keeping Lovie Smith after this season would be because they don’t want to fire a Head Coach after one season two years in a row, Lovie has been awful this year in Houston and somehow the team has gotten worse a change NEEDS to happen
- Hire Shane Steichen (Eagles OC) as the new head coach – Steichen will no doubt be one of the hottest names on the coaching carousel this offseason and for a good reason the eagles are 10-1 and a big reason for that is Steichen's offense and the work he’s done with Jalen Hurts since he arrived in 2021. Additionally, he was the offensive coordinator for the chargers in 2020 when Justin Herbert had his stellar rookie year. Safe to say the man knows football and how to develop talent and the cherry on top he’s only 37
- Acquire Gardner Minshew from the eagles for a 5th-round draft pick. – This is where the odd part of this scenario comes into play. Why would you trade for Gardner Minshew when you could take a QB with the first overall pick? Well, there are 7 reasons why reason number 1. The Texans offense is incredibly devoid of playmakers and they will likely trade Brandin Cooks. Although they will still have Dameon Pierce, and John Metchie, and likely draft an offensive weapon that’s still not enough to provide a stable environment for a rookie QB. 2. Gardner Minshew already knows Steichen's playbook so he can hit the ground running once he arrives in Houston. 3. Minshew is only 26 and he will be 27 next season that’s super young for a QB meaning that if he performs well he could be more than just a stop-gap guy 4. Minshew's stats are good specifically his touchdown to interception ratio of 41-12 meaning that he takes care of the football and makes wise decisions which is backed up by his completion percentage of 63.2. Reason number 5. Minshew has won on bad teams before he went 6-6 on the Jaguars his rookie year but he did only go 1-7 his second year. However, he also played much of that season with an injured thumb, and by the time he came back the tank was in full effect. 6. Even if he doesn’t work out you still allow Steichen to catch his footing as a Head Coach in the NFL and there are plenty of QBs to choose from in next year's draft such as Caleb Williams, Quinn Ewers, Anthony Richardson, Shedeur Sanders, Cameron Ward or anyone else who might rise to the top of draft boards. 7. Will Anderson Jr.
- With the first overall pick, the Texans select Will Anderson Jr. – With the Texans not taking a QB with the first overall pick it allows them to draft the best overall player Will Anderson Jr. To put it plain and simple the man is a freak. I personally think that he would immediately improve the Texans defense from one of the worst in the league to respectable all on his own, he’s that special of a prospect. The pick also allows you to focus more on the offense with your next few picks instead of being forced to switch between the two sides of the ball. Which allows the offense to gain some much-needed talent via the draft. Resulting in an overall greater improvement on both sides of the football when compared to if they had picked a QB.
- Pick Jordan Addison, Jaxson Smith-Njigba, or Quentin Johnston with the first-rounder acquired from the browns. – this one is self-explanatory there’s no telling where the browns' pick could be but it doesn’t matter if they draft one of these 3 guys with that pick and their good
- Select Darnell Washington with the 32nd overall pick – I know that the Texans have multiple tight ends on the roster but are any of them actually good enough to be a starter? Exactly that's why they should add another weapon on the offense with the 6 foot 7, 270 pounds, 4.6-speed guy out of Georgia, who by the way can hurdle people. That seems like a slam-dunk RedZone threat to me.
So in conclusion the Texans offense would have QB – Gardner Minshew, RB – Dameon Pierce, WR1 – Jordan Addison/Jackson Smith Njigba/Quentin Johnston WR2 – Nico Collins, Slot – John Metchie, TE – Darnell Washington, and the defense is anchored by Will Anderson Jr. as well as second-year Derek Stingley Jr and second year Jalen Pitre roaming the secondary with one or two free agent pick-ups added on as well. Personally, I think this is one of the most ideal and realistic offseason outcomes for the Houston Texans but I'm wondering what you guys think
