With Shaq Mason’s extension, should we extend Tytus Howard next year?
We’ve already took his 5th year option last year, so he’s under contract this upcoming season.
I give some blame the Texans for messing up his development, forcing him to play out of position in 2021 and play left guard, where he was awful to say the least. He clearly stated that he’s wants to play tackle and he also said that he wants to finish his career in Houston.
OL continuity is huge and if we do extend him, we’ll have our entire Offensive Line under contract solidified for the next 3 seasons which is huge.
Tytus was solid last season. Only giving up 3 sacks, 5 QB hits, and 38 total pressures. He had 9 penalties as well. I personally like the guy. He seems pretty bought into the vision and has also defended the moves Nick Caserio makes on Twitter (maybe he’s just playing nice to get an extension 😅)
Texans also extended Tunsil earlier this year to a 3 year $75M deal so the amount of money we will have tied up in the OL (while not necessarily a bad thing since OL is very important) is also something to keep an eye on
Right now we’re paying him $13.2M this year, and the Right Tackle Market would suggest that an extension would cost upwards of $17M per year. Would you extend him?
