Will Yordan Be An Astro For Life Like Altuve?
I personally think he should, especially because Altuve/Alvarez are extremely similar to Biggio/Bagwell. He is currently locked up until his age-31 season and I am hoping that they can re-extend him if he is still really good like they did to Altuve. If he enters the HOF, it should undoubtedly be in an Astros hat too.
However, I did think the same with Bregman when he first got extended. But I think they can be way more likelier to be able to do it with Yordan than Bregman. Here are the reasons why:
1) Bregman's agent is currently Boras and he probably wants a big long-term deal. When he signed the extension in 2019, it wasn't with Boras and it was more of a security blanket. Not saying that he doesn't like Houston, I really do think he loves being there but his main preference is market value. Yordan's agent isn't Boras and he already signed an extension buying out 3 FA years
2) The Astros were in the position to pick-and-choose between 2 high-priced players to retain (Altuve, Bregman). Altuve was the easy choice given his history with the organization, the way he was aging at the plate, and his affordability given that Crane has the 5 year rule intact. Crane has only broken his 5-year rule twice: once to Yordan (6/115 in June 2022) and once to Altuve when he was extended at 7/163.5 in 2018.
They shouldn't be in this position when Altuve will be making 10M in 2028 and 2029 and he very likely isn't going to produce at a way which will warrant another big contract (20+ AAV). Retaining Yordan shouldn't be an issue if Crane is going to maintain being lower/around the first luxury tax threshold so he can be deemed a franchise player by then. Just make sure you don't commit to many horrific contracts by then.
3) Bregman's extension ends at his age-30 season while Yordan's ends at his age-31 season. They probably want to go under the luxury tax the next year because they surpassed it this year so they could let him walk as a result. Yordan's contract ends in 2028 and I think he could be open to another short-term market value AAV which pays him until like 36 or 37. That should be doable for Crane. Yordan's bat should age well enough to get another decent contract
I do think Yordan loves Houston and really wanted to be there so he accepted an extension here. The Astros have been good so far even after letting star players in Cole, Springer, and Correa walk so far. But Crane is running the team like Jerry Jones which could be harmful for the organization and his arrogance has taken him so far so there is a slight possibility they could fall out of contention especially if they let both Bregman and Tucker walk.
Let me know your thoughts on whether you think Yordan will ultimately be an Astro for life just like Altuve
