Why Jerod Mayo Could Work
First off, I'm not saying I want Mayo but it's rather that I don't think it's worth hitting the panic button if he's hired. One of the main reasons why Belichick is successful is because he has 3 key factors
-
He's an excellent schemer and gameplanner and just an excellent coach all around.
-
He has earned the respect and you just have to admit he knows what he's talking about because he's won so much. This is why he can be so blunt with players and they just have to take it on the chin.
-
He's more personable than you may realize. When I watch clips of him in camps/practices, he's not a tyrant. There's even stories about him telling jokes and just being chill overall.
With that said, many folks in his tree don't have all 3 of those factors and too many of them are tyrants which is why it doesn't pan out. Mayo, however, is likely to have the correct personality to actually carry on Belichick's coaching style. If you listen to him speak and you learn about his background, you will learn why I say this. Go watch the your life video on him. I think his experience with being in business taught him how to be personable and HOW TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS. That's what's key.
Not only is he personable but I believe the rumors about Nick having a potential candidate in mind for a long time could very well be about Mayo. He's watched Mayo coach not just as a coach but as a player. He led his team and became captain in his second season. He probably really understands what Belichick asks of him and understands the scheming. This is why Nick might like this coaching prospect, because he's seen him to it for years.
TLDR- Mayo has the persona and relationship building skills that are necessary to successfully run a Belichick style of coaching that most other coaches in his tree don't. Nick has seen Mayo as a player and coach, be an excellent leader and coach his teammates. This is probably why Nick is interested.
