Why is Making Friends Difficult?

Through many conversations with acquaintances and reading forums, why is every one complaining about not having any friends, and yet when you talk to those same people they go completely MIA? It seems the common complaint these days is about not being able to make friends, it’s like why don’t these people then get together and get to know each other?
