Why did trash/recycling pickup happen today (Labor Day)??

The city has consistently postponed trash and recycling pickup when we have a national holiday. But not today! My neighbor and I both didn’t get our cans out in time for pickup at 8am. Is this just a time and cost saving measure, so the city can say it stuck to the pickup schedule while expecting far fewer cans to get.
