Why are Harris County Courts closed to the public?
TLDR: Why are Harris County Courts closed to the public? Are there plans to open them up again?
I think they should be open to the public. When I was there recently, everyone was kept in the hallway. There was no way to talk to anyone in the court at all; if your issue came up early in the day, you were lucky; if you were waiting there for hours on end, scared to even visit the restroom or coffee bar for fear you'd miss your case, then so bad for you. One young man had come to see the arraignment for a criminal in a traumatic incident that he was witness to, but there was no way to talk to anyone or know what was happening, and there was no way he was going to be allowed entry into the court. The officers seemed to delight in the power trip, which didn't help. Also, doesn't this give the voting public a complete lack of accountability for the people we elect? Sorry if I am all sour grapes on this issue; perhaps I just don't understand the system.
