Where to stay when visiting for a game?

My friend and I are doing a Texas baseball week in August. We'll be spending a few days in the Houston area and catching an Astros game and a Sugar Land Space Cowboys game. As you may know, the Houston metro area is a big place! Any suggestions on where to stay? We're looking for safe, clean, comfortable but not super expensive (think Holiday Inn Express). Convenient to the ballpark would be nice, but since we're also going to a game in Sugar Land (and probably visiting the Space Center), anywhere downtown or to the south probably works. An interesting area would be nice, but since we're not there for long, something that meets the other needs but is just a hotel at an offramp would be OK too. I'd appreciate any thoughts on areas or specific places. THANKS!!!

BTW, our other baseball games for the week are a Rangers game, a San Antonio Missions game and a Round Rock (Austin) Express game!
