Where to buy in Houston

My husband, our 5 year old son and I will be moving to Houston in a few months. We currently live in The Netherlands. I'm American, east coaster, and my husband's from South Africa. I went to Houston once about 20 years ago, but that's it. My husband works for Shell and I'll be working from home.

Any suggestions on a good place to look to buy in a good school school district that's under an hour commute to the city center? Ideally we'd like to spend less than 800,000.

Any other tips for a new family to the area would be greatly appreciated too! We're really excited to make the move!
