Wheelchair help

I’m on mobile so excuse any bad formatting/grammar.

I’m a special education teacher in HISD (won’t even open that can of worms.) I work with students with moderate to severe disabilities. Some of my students use wheelchairs.

One particular student is having the absolute hardest time obtaining a wheelchair. She has one currently that was too small when she received it. It’s so old that the brakes are completely obsolete. I can push her chair with her brakes ON and there is no difference as to when they’re off. The traction on the wheels is non-existent.

This student has insurance but is being given the run-around constantly. It’s been a few years of this.

I need help finding resources or any ideas on anything I can do. She is set to graduate soon and I would love for her to leave the school/start her 18+ program with a chair she’ll actually fit in and that is safe.

I’ve applied to a few programs on behalf of the family but haven’t heard back and tbh am not super optimistic since they “have” insurance—although the insurance is sucking real hard at the moment.

Anything helps!
