What’s your experience with the Harris Health Financial Assistance Program (was ‘Gold Card ‘)

Title.

I've been a patient at Legacy Community Health for years now, and in my experience, they're beyond a Godsend for anyone who doesn't have insurance or has insurance that isn't accepted at certain places, etc., and have eligibility for people who need to pay on a sliding scale. I've gone to them for general dental, therapy, general health/cancer screenings/lab tests, Covid shots, pharmacy, and OBGYN – in general, preventative non-emergency medical care needs. If there's something that requires a specialty, they refer their patients to another clinic or a hospital (ex: they referred me to Ibn Sina when I needed a tooth extraction).

I was laid off in Aug and am on unemployment rn. My OB referred me offsite for a procedure and when I told her my current situation, she said to apply for the Gold Card (now the Harris Health Financial Assistance Program). I had never heard of it til now.

It appears to be accepted at LBJ and Ben Taub hospitals. I've heard and read not great things about Ben Taub in particular (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Anyone applied for and used HHFA/Gold Card before? What was your experience? Etc.
