What’s a great neighborhood for young professionals/recent graduates that don’t break the bank?
I finished an internship and got a job offer for January 2021 so I’ll be moving to Houston in December of this year. I’ve lived in the Austin area my whole life and while in Houston, I realized I do not want to live in downtown. The main building of my job is downtown but I’m in a career where I’ll be working at client sites throughout the county so I will hardly be in the main building during the year. And the company takes account of where we live so they don’t send us to places more than 20 minutes away from where we live. And if I have to go downtown, I’ve mastered the metro so I would just ride that. Anyway, my biggest living concerns are crime, noise, and location. I know Houston is one of the biggest cities in the country so there’ll be crime, but I want to feel relatively safe in my apartment. I’ll be studying for a licensing exam during the year so I would like to live somewhere where people aren’t constantly having kickbacks in the parking lot. And I want to be able to go out to places in the city and not have to drive 30 minutes to get there. I want to be able to take an Uber home if I’ve been drinking and not wake up to a $45 bill the next morning. I’ll also be making 60k a year, I want to find a roommate if possible, I have no pets or disabilities, and I have a car. Anyway, I’ve been talking with colleagues and researching on my own and found a few neighborhoods but what do y’all think?
- Heights
- Midtown
- EaDo
- The museum area (idk the actual neighborhood name)
- Upper Kirby
- Galleria
- Rice village
- Highland
- Washington Ave
Luckily Houston is only a 2.5 hour drive so I’m definitely going to spend a weekend or two touring apartments after I pick the neighborhoods that would suit me best. I know that it floods and I’m planning to rent on a higher floor and look for places with elevated parking lots.
Also any advice about Houston or moving or anything else would be greatly appreciated!
