What is this cricket-looking bug making a screaming sound? (No pics)

The other day, this like huge, beige colored, crocket-looking insect perched itself upright on a column on the balcony and then made this sound that was like pure agony. It was like this ramp up from soft to loud soft to loud and then almost like a screaming sound that went on forever, like it was as loud as a fucking alarm and completely terrifying. What the hell was it? Sorry, I didn’t get a pic, I was too busy pissing myself and wondering if it was going to kill me cos I was right next to it and just thought if i would stay still it wouldn’t notice me and try to kill me or whatever. It was huge, like maybe a little over half the size of my palm. It head butted the balcony sliding door a few times too and that was hella loud, as well, then it did the whole screaming thing I just described.
