What Do You Think is the Future of the Houston Economy/Job Market?

I grew up in and still live near the Houston area and have been wondering about the future of our city when it comes to the economy and job market.

For decades this city has been dominated by the Oil & Gas industry along with all its ancillaries and even non-O&G company's and jobs depend on and are impacted by O&G.

I'm curious to get /r/Houston thoughts mainly because I am frustrated by the city government's lack of focus on attracting new employers that add diversity to our economy.

We talk about our healthcare industry but this creates jobs mainly for Nurses and Doctor's but nothing beyond this (e.g. Medical Equipment R&D, Medical Equipment Manufacturing, Pharma).

We've also seen Austin become the clear leader in tech yet continue to hold onto our past as the "Energy Capital" of the World despite having limited renewable energy company's based here.

Thoughts?
