What can I do about my landlord in a situation like this?
| |
It's officially been a week since our AC broke down and started blowing out hot ass air instead. I tried to get my landlord to care about the situation at least half as much as I do, but as of now he hasn't bothered contacting me about getting it fixed. I had to move things out in the literal middle of the night because it was the coolest we could move around in. I had maybe two hours of sleep in the three days we were stuck there, and in one occasion all my foster cats slipped out through the open windows and doors and haven't been back since. I don't blame them. I've lost food and pets (my tank of pre-covid fish died from the water getting too hot) and currently both spouse and I are unemployed, so we took a huge hit from the loss. It's our last month in the lease which would explain why he isn't bothering, but the next family to move in after us has kids and I really don't want him to keep this bullshit up with them and putting them in danger next year when this will eventually happen all over again. It's been a recurring problem year after year, and the house had parts that were added on without insulation so even the nails we got out of the walls were too hot to touch at times. He's always dragged his feet when it came to repairs, and has broken contract every time by not telling me when exactly a person would show up, even costing us catering jobs a few years back because we were blocked in during a stove replacement service. From what I've heard from repair men he has over 300 properties and treats them all the same, came over from California with this idea he'd hit it big in real estate here in Texas but didn't consider the cost of actually maintaining the properties. As I mentioned, we currently have no impactful income (I work on the weekends at a flea market but at best bring home $300, spouse just now filed for unemployment as we've been busy moving things to do so before) and I tried reaching out to pro-bono lawyers for advice, but my appointment is set for August 2nd, after my lease is up. I just want to know what to tell him in terms of getting my rent and deposit back from him because I can't afford to not get reimbursement. submitted by /u/Mexican_Texican |
