What are my chances of realistically living in Houston on $18/hour? (solo or with roommates)

I’ll be making around $2,400 post-tax and am considering moving into either a studio or 1-bedroom apartment, but I’m also open to renting a room if it makes more financial sense.

I’d prefer to keep my rent between $600-$800 a month but would be willing to stretch it to $850 if it meant living somewhere safer or closer to work. I’ve been looking at places near South or Southeast Houston, as they seem more affordable.

Since I’ve never rented alone, I don’t have any prior rental history, but I do have a good credit score of 750 and a fair amount in savings. Do you think I’ll have any trouble getting approved for an apartment or room?

Here’s a rough outline of my predicted monthly expenses:

  • Rent: $600–800 (possibly $850 max)
  • Utilities: ~$350 (water, electric, gas, sewer/trash, internet)
  • Gas: ~$100 (my car uses a fair amount of fuel)
  • Car Insurance: ~$110
  • Health & Dental Insurance: ~$50
  • Food: ~$300
  • Miscellaneous: ~$150 (personal expenses, subscriptions, etc.)

I may be overestimating some expenses (like utilities) and underestimating my take-home pay. I’m not sure how much to expect in taxes each month in Texas, but I’ve heard some people recommend setting aside 1/4 to 1/3 of income—does that sound accurate?

I know renting a room is probably the smarter move, as I’m still young and want to save, what apps or websites do you recommend to look for a room. But I’m curious if anyone here is making a similar income and living solo in Houston.

Would love any insights on whether my budget seems realistic, tips on affordable and safe areas, and any general advice about living in Houston on this income. Thanks in advance! 🙏
