What are good neighborhoods in Houston in which to move?

I might be moving to the city next year and i am curious to know what would be some good neighborhoods in which to move.

I am looking some place were you could have a good social life (bars, clubs, restaurants, cinema etc) and that is safe. Also, what is there to do in and around the city with regards to cycling, hiking and camping?

I would be working at the Ben Taub Hospital and my income would be 60K/year. I'm guessing that renting alone would be impossible and that i would have to look for roommates and i would be willing to do a 60 minute commute; possibly a bit longer, but that would depended on the location in which i would rent.
