week 1 ?
(tldr at bottom)
So we've all been wondering what's up with the o-line shenanigans.
Now, I'm no expert by any means, but what I've become more educated on is that it seems the refs are cracking down harder than they used to on some specific penalties; penalties that people are saying the refs used to sorta let slide in years past. Naturally this leads people to speculate on whether certain highly paid individuals were making a name for themselves based on the inaction of the zebras from previous years.
but I digress
upon pondering this I thought: just because we had a productive week 1, does that mean the refs THEMSELVES were shaking off rust? 🤔 (i.e. every guy with a whistle getting on the same page as far as what they need to shore up on this season)
when a whistle throws the the yellow, it's easy to spot what went down: 1. the game grinds to a halt 2. the analysts give their take (if watching from home) 3. zebra makes the announcement
but what I'm wondering is if anyone (with more free time than I 😅) was able to go back and spot if we were essentially shooting ourselves in the foot EVEN on week 1 and perhaps we just skated bye since the entire league (officials included I guess 🤷♂️) were trying to get their sea-legs as it were.
did we go brain dead starting week 2 or did the officials take their Wheaties and a cuppa right before the Bears game?
tl;dr were we making these same mistakes even on week 1?
thoughts??
