We should NOT trade DeShaun Watson until he suits up and plays at least another full season for us
Might be an unpopular opinion on this sub, but hear me out. I don't care what Watson wants. We shouldn't let him go unless we get a massive haul. Otherwise, force him to play for us or let him rot. Let's be honest, we won't get fair trade value for him anytime soon, even assuming he settles with all his accusers and Goodell suspends him for the season. Why? Because the NFL is less about winning, but more about making money. Watson is toxic and has lost his marketing appeal. Which owner/front office would give up a massive haul for one of the highest paid players in the league when they couldn't sell him to their own fanbase and sponsors as their new "face of the franchise"? Teams regularly get away with employing low-charactered guys, but none of them play QBs. Mike Vick had to start his comeback as a backup. Antonio Brown is the WR3 on his own team and will never see big money again. Other teams would try to low-ball us because they would take into account the PR hit and the loss of marketability.
The only way we could get a haul for Watson is if he suits up for us again for at least one full season and slowly tries to rehab his public image. Be a good soldier. Stop being a diva. Show contrition. Say all the right things. Put up elite numbers.
He has 5 years left on his contract and 3 franchise tags (2 affordable ones), so we control him until the end of 2027 (age-32). If he gets suspended for a season, I'm quite sure his contract would get tolled another year. He has no leverage. We're under no obligation to trade him for peanuts to make him happy. When he comes back from his suspension presumably in 2022, he can either play for us or not play at all (in which case, we could go after guarantees). Call his bluff.
