Visiting Houston Space center and surrounding area without a car.

Me and my bf from out of town will spend a day or two in Houston visiting the space center and surrounding area. Will we be ok doing all this without a car? Is public transportation good and reliable in this area. We’re primarily looking for stuff within walking distance from the space center.
