Vacation trying to find my place.

Hey, I’m here on vacation trying to find where I want to settle down. I’m engaged and one thing that drove me to consider Texas is that the houses were so affordable. So far I like the roads and most people are kinder than the DC area. Does anyone have advice or places to check out seeing if Houston or Texas in general is the place to settle? I’ve visited/lived in LA, suburbs of DC, rural VA, and Baltimore MD. Nothing so far feels like where I want to settle.
