Unpopular opinion: I don’t like the Lovie Smith hire, here’s why…
I feel like whoever takes the helm of this garbage franchise at this point in time is going to be another fall guy. We finally had a really good defensive coordinator and are now probably going to have to sacrifice him to the wolves within the next three years. I would’ve rather have Brought in another outside hire at this point I don’t care who it was. Hell, even keep Culley. But I wanted Lovie Smith to stay as our defensive coordinator now he will be out on his ass within three years. Yes he was with the Bears when they went to the Super Bowl, but they also had a million more weapons than this team, including a really good defense, which this team does not have. I also feel that some guys are just made to be really good coordinators, see Wade Phillips, Romeo Crennel, and Todd Bowles. I wasn’t crazy when Bill O’Brien let Wade Phillips go just because he wanted his own guy. Now I’m afraid that is going to be what happens to Lovie Smith whenever he is eventually fired or superseded by a younger person. Finally, people need to stop denying the fact that this hire wasn’t forced. It is very evident that they wanted Josh McCown. The Texans were even announcing who they were interviewing as head coaches every time they would do a new interview. Not once did Lovie Smith’s name come up. Hell, even during Lovie Smith’s press conference he made it sound like he was caught by surprise as well. This was the most Texans thing ever when it comes to hiring someone, they drug it out till last minute and just ended up promoting someone within like “hey f**k it let’s just throw him in there and see if it works”. Don’t get me wrong I like lovey Smith, but I want him here long-term as a defensive coordinator. I’ve seen him as a head coach, I just don’t think he is what this team needs and I’m afraid they will use him as a stop gap which is what I don’t want.
