UK to Houston

Hi, I’m potentially going to be moving from the UK to Houston for work and was hoping to get some advice from those in the know on some key areas. Would be myself, wife and 2 young kids <5 y/o. Will likely be working on the energy corridor and salary would be somewhere in the $150-200k a year range. Medical etc would all be included. Questions: 1. Aside from mortgage / rent / property tax and car, what are the other big ticket items for monthly expense? Another $1000 for bills etc? Cost of groceries and some eating out etc? Another $1000-2000? I have no idea? Is there anything that’s likely to blindside us in terms of costs? What’s a realistic monthly overall expenditure for a decent lifestyle in a town like Katy / Cypress / Spring?

  1. As a keen cyclist…Do people cycle to commute? Are the roads safe or are there cycle paths? Would likely live somewhere in the Katy, Cypress, Spring type area (due to other commitments on location as well as Energy Corridor) and is it feasible / safe to cycle for commute? Coming from the UK so rain doesn’t bother me, nor does extreme heat.

Any info or help would be much appreciated!
