Two main groups within Texas’ unvaccinated population: white conservatives in rural areas, and Hispanic and Black people in big cities
The reason for this post is that the Texas Tribune ran this piece last week.
Here are the key points concerning Houston
- In Texas’ largest counties — Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar and Travis — neighborhoods with the highest proportions of Black and Hispanic populations are some of the least vaccinated areas.
- Neighborhoods with median incomes below the county’s median income also hold vaccination rates lower than that of the county’s.
- Rural counties have consistently lagged behind the state’s fully vaccinated rate.
If additional ammunition will help you with stubborn family who are black or Hispanic then click the link. They are almost 3x more likely to go to the hospital if unvaccinated than a white person. Tell them to take the vaccine to support Biden.
Finally, tell your unvaccinated uncle in Bryan/College Station TSA (Area) there are 42 hospital beds available and ZERO ICU beds available as of this morning – if interested Houston has 1322 hospital beds this morning and 50 ICU. Tell him to take it to support Trump's hard work on the vaccines.
It shouldn't be a political discussion. It should be about helping community. Every RN that retires or burns out exacerbates an existing shortage.
Finally, if everyone would stop being an asshole with the unvaccinated and talk to them and not lecture them, labeling them or be condescending we might win over more converts. If you think they are hopeless, then stop talking to them about it and have someone else do it.
Oh, and Uber is giving free rides up to $25 ea way to get the vaccine.
