Trying to find help for a neighbor regarding Renter’a Rights
My neighbor is disabled, and extremely poor. He is renting a dangerously dilapidated 40s home just north of 610 from a landlord that lives in Jersey Village.
The house has no a/c, leaks water, and smells so strongly of rot and human/animal waste that I can smell it across the street. The roof has holes, the siding is falling off…i struggle to understand how it’s even legal to rent.
I talked to the tenant, and he just thinks this is what he gets. And the landlord has zero interest in fixing anything until the city cites him, and then he only does the bare minimum. When I told the landlord that my pregnant wife can also smell the waste from our house he said we should just “suck it up.”
I’m trying to find an organization that can advocate for the renter, and help him either find better housing or put pressure on the landlord to actually make the home habitable. If y’all have any suggestions, please please let me know.
