Travelling to Houston

I am thinking of travelling solo to Houston from Canada for a mini vacay mid august thurs-monday. I have few questions,

Is public transit good enough to get by places? I don’t plan on renting a car, and probably stay somewhere within downtown area.

What are must things to do? I am definitely going to NASA museum as that’s the main reason to go to houston.

Any other suggestions?
