Top Players of the Week (11) (6/3-6/9)

Hitters of the Week (11) (6/3-6/9)

1 – Yordan Alvarez (27 PA, Min 15 PA, 8 Astros, 238 MLB Players Qualified)

  • The best player of the week in the Majors according to Batter Run Value/100 (7.6, 100th Percentile). This is due to (BRV/100 being somewhat context dependent) his 7 RBI with at least a 13.5% WPA Swing, including a huge bases clearing Double on the 7th that broke the seal on a 1-1 game in the 7th, in an eventual 7-1 victory over Anaheim. Other statistical highlights include being 3rd in Net WPA (0.68, 98th) in the MLB, 6th in wOBA (0.545, 98th), and T-4th in K Rate (3.7, 99th).

2 – Yainer Diaz (25 PA, Min 15 PA, 8 Astros, 238 MLB Players Qualified)

  • The elephant in the room is the 4 Game Hitting Streak. Staying on the 13.5% WPA benchmark, Yainer had 5 Base Hits and a ROE at or past that threshold. Most notably a 35.5% WPA SWING, the 2nd most on an Astros Hit of the 2024 Season, only behind a base hit from another Catcher. The big swing was a drought breaking Go-Ahead Homer, turning a 4-4 tie to a 6-4 advantage during an 8th Inning Rally on Monday the 3rd. Other statistical highlights for him were his ISO (0.480, 98th Percentile) and SLG (0.800, 97th Percentile).

3 – Alex Bregman (23 PA, Min 15 PA, 8 Astros, 238 MLB Players Qualified)

  • The 3rd player here to post both a wOBA above .450 and OPS above 1.000, making the Astros one of 5 teams to have 3 such players. Bregman was in the 92nd Percentile in WPA/PA. Much of this comes from a Game Tying, Rally Starting Solo-Shot to the ConocoPhillips Sign in Left, contributing 31.2% in WPA. Bregman did great in terms of getting on base, with a 0.478 OBP, in the 94th Percentile and 2nd Among Astros.

Pitchers of the Week (11) (6/3-6/9)

Starters

1 – Framber Valdez

  • Framber made this choice easy by pitching the 9th (9 Inning) Complete Game of the MLB Season so far. The 9 Inning Game on Friday the 7th was only the 3rd CG in the AL to that point, and 2nd by the Astros (guess who did the other). During the start, Framber struck out 8, tied for his most this season. Among Astros Starts (not starters), Framber on the 7th had the lowest OBP (0.229, 86th Percentile), lowest wOBA (0.188, 88th), and highest Whiff Rate (38%, 93rd)

2 – Hunter Brown

  • Hunter claimed the only other QS by an Astro this week. Hunter also had the only scoreless outing, allowing no runs in 6.0 Innings of work, with 7 Strikeouts and 2 Hits. Hunter had one of the best starts of the Week (SP, Min 50 Pitches) by PRV/100 (2.9, 91st Percentile), BA (0.100 93rd), xBA (0.159, 94th), and SLG (0.197, 95th).

Relievers

1 – Bryan Abreu

  • Abreu came in 3 times during the week, and picked up 3 Holds. His 18.5% in Net WPA was far and away the most by any Astro, with the next closest being at 6.5%. In his 2.2 Innings during the week, Abreu allowed 6 Baserunners, though only one of those was a hit. Abreu’s ERA lowered to a Season-Low 2.97 after the week.

2 – Shawn Dubin

  • Dubin came in on Wednesday the 5th with a 2-Run Deficit, and exited after 2.1 Innings with a 2-Run Deficit. Dubin, who in that lone outing faced the minimum, allowed no Base Runners and struck out 2. Dubin kept the Astros in the game that day, and though the team lost 4-2, if they won, Dubin certainly would have been a big part of the story.
