Top Players of the Week (10) (5/27-6/2)
Hitters of the Week (10) (5/27-6/2)
1 – Alex Bregman (28 PA, Min 15 PA, 10 Astros, 262 MLB Players Qualified)
- In a week where, frankly, few Astros batters were even above average, Bregman stands out as my batter of the week. Finishing 7th in wRC+ among all batters this week (251), which went along with a wOBA of .529 that finished in the 98th Percentile, and a Slugging% of 0.893 in the 99th Percentile, only topped by the duo in the Bronx. This is due to his 10 Hits, a whopping 6 of which were Extra Base Hits, and 4 of the XBH being Homers. All of his Homers came while either tied or while down 1 or 2.
2 – Yordan Alvarez (28 PA, Min 15 PA, 10 Astros, 262 MLB Players Qualified)
- June Started with a Bang for Yordan Alvarez, as he went 3-3 on June 1st With a Walk and 2 Homers in the Saturday Win. Yordan was the only one on the Astros above the 60th Percentile in OBP and xOBP, as well as was first on the team in WPA/LI, BA, xBA and xwOBA. In fact, he was among the best of the best in xBA, as he was 3rd in the Majors in that category on the week.
3 – Victor Caratini (15 PA, Min 15 PA, 10 Astros, 262 MLB Players Qualified)
- Similarly to Mauricio Dubon in May, Caratini just barely made the playing time cut, but still ended up on this list. Caratini hit for power during the week, ending in the 90th Percentile in SLG (0.643, 91st), xSLG (0.761, 97th), ISO (0.429, 96th), and xISO (0.500, 98th). Caratini had 4 RBI, 2 of which being on Solo Homers. Victor’s Solo Shot on the 2nd was his best play by WPA, at 10.1%, cutting a 2 Run Lead in half.
Pitchers of the Week (10) (5/27-6/2)
Starters
1- Justin Verlander
- In his start on the 29th, Verlander allowed 3 Hits with 1 Walk while only giving up one run to a Solo Homer. According to WPA and GameScore, this was Verlander’s 2nd best start, only behind his 7 Inning Shutout on May 12th. He struck out a Tied-Team High 9 during the Extra Innings Loss.
2 – Spencer Arrighetti
- Arrighetti put up far and away his best start on the 30th, giving up only 2 Hits, Walking 3, and 0 Runs. This start was the only shutout by the pitcher on the Astros this week, and the bullpen would help close that out, resulting in a 4-0 Astros win. With a 28.6% WPA and 73 GameScore, there was a lot to be happy about on the 30th.
Relievers
1 – Josh Hader
- While only nabbing one Save, Hader certainly could have had a win on the 29th. Hader came in 3 times, allowing 3 Hits, 1 Walk, Striking Out 6, and 0 Runs. He was 2nd on the team in WPA, with 17.2%. His ERA is down to a Season Low (after March) 3.67 and his FIP is even better, currently sitting at 2.43.
2 – Bryan Abreu
- Arguably could have been #1, Abreu came in 4 times, pitched 4.0 Innings, and gave up 1 run, though that 1 run was in a game the Astros were already up by 4 in during the top of the 8th. Other than that, Abreu allowed no Runs in the other 3 appearances when he came in either ahead 1 or into a tie game. While all 3 did result in low score losses, he still gave the Astros a chance late in the game.
