The Tommy Tune Awards shine a spotlight on the creativity and dedication of Houston’s young performers and educators, celebrating the magic of musical theatre while inspiring a lifelong love for the arts.

Each year, high schools across the Greater Houston area stage full-scale musicals that go head-to-head in 18 award categories—from Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Lead Performer to Outstanding Orchestra, Choreographer, and Director. These productions showcase not only the talent on stage but also the artistry and innovation happening behind the curtain in set design, costumes, lighting, and stage management.

Throughout the 2025–2026 school year, a team of adjudicators—seasoned Houston theatre professionals with expertise as performers, designers, directors, choreographers, and musicians—will attend and evaluate each participating school’s production. With their backgrounds in both professional theatre and arts education, these mentors bring insight, encouragement, and recognition to every aspect of the students’ work, ensuring that the Tommy Tune Awards are as much about growth and inspiration as they are about competition.

The Tommy Tune Awards are named for Broadway legend, Houston native and Lamar High School alumnus Tommy Tune.  A performer, director and choreographer with more than 50 years of stage experience, Tune received nine Tony Awards for his work in the following productions: Seesaw, My One and Only, A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine, Nine, Grand Hotel and The Will Rogers Follies. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2003 by President Bush.
