To the asshole drivers on Eldridge honking at me earlier today, I was trying to let an elementary kid cross
Most of Houston crosswalks are poorly marked, and last month a kid in Katy was killed in a crosswalk on the way to school.
So today I see a kid about 10 years old trying to cross Eldridge at one of the many crosswalks there (around Briar Forest). It was the end of the school day and traffic is dense but so what, I stop because we don't need anymore dead kids. I'm in the right lane of two lanes, keeping an eye on the left lane to make sure they stop too before encouraging him to cross. We make eye contact, and he's keeping an eye on the cars, too, and about to walk out in front of my car as protection while it's clear for him to cross. But the cars start honking their horns. And because of these inconsiderate assholes and their horns, this elementary kid reassesses the situation, backs up and waves me on. He clearly communicates to me that he's not gonna cross.
I don't know if the honkers were aware there was a kid trying to use a crosswalk, or that there were even three crosswalks in the area. How do we make the city aware of these high-risk crosswalks and get them better signage?
