To Houston or Not to Houston?

Happy New Year!

My brother has lived in Houston for over a decade. Energy Corridor. I visit a few times a year so am familiar with that area at least.

I live in North Brooklyn, and have you kids who would appreciate the space and cousins nearby. They love visiting Houston and why not? Good weather, especially when NYC has none, and lots of space.

I’m not going to sit here and ask “what will it be like?”. I see the pros and cons. With kids, I think more pros than cons. It’s a hassle to go grocery shopping in NYC and staples like milk, are almost double the price!

However, I don’t think energy corridor is for me. It’s a bit suburban for me. I mean yes it’s in Houston but the vibe is like the huge parking lots and huge chain stores.

Reading this subreddit, many people have pointed to the Heights. I went there yesterday (19th and Yale), and walked up. It seemed very quiet what with one coffee shop and the rest vintage stores.

Are there other areas which are somewhat walkable yet not too far from the conveniences that Houston provides, such as big park for the kids, stores etc?

I know I won’t get a Brooklyn here but is there somewhat of a compromise where I don’t have to drive daily to even get a cup of coffee etc?
