This spike in COVID feels different. It seems worse than the numbers suggest. Is anyone else seeing the same thing?

During the last year of COVID and the two prior spikes, I knew a total of 5 people that were infected. During this spike I know of 16 people, most not connected that are now or have been infected in the last 4 weeks. I know this is anecdotal, but I wanted to know if anyone else is seeing the same thing. It also seems that people were not admitting it as much during the first two spikes. This may be a possible explanation. What is everyone else seeing?
