This is an optimal year to be in the market for a new coach
Because there’s very little competition
3 teams have fired their coach and it looks like the Cardinals will probably fire Kliff. Outside of that there don’t seem to be many hot seats. But let’s say there’s a surprise firing just to be realistic. That leaves us competing with 5 teams.
Sean Payton wants to come back and he’s probably gonna fill one of those slots. Story just broke that the Broncos are interviewing him so let’s say they get him. We’re down to competing with 4 teams.
I’d say there are 7 HC candidates that I really like out there. Gannon, Steichen, Moore, Quinn, Ryans, Waldron, and Ben Johnson. All coordinators who probably want to try head coaching at some point.
Even in the worst case scenario where we are competing with 4 teams and we are considered the absolute worst destination we’d still have 3 or more of those guys available and that’s worst case.
Let’s say we don’t get worst case. There was just a report that the leading candidate in AZ if Kliff is fired would be their defensive coordinator Vance Joseph so that brings us down to competing with 3 teams. Maybe there’s no surprise firing this year, we could be looking at competing with just 2 other teams for those candidates.
I’m also not sure we’re the worst destination, there’s increasing chat around the league about the Colts being seen as dysfunctional with Irsay meddling a lot more now. Their roster is better than ours but they don’t have a QB either and we have a lot more draft capital and a better cap situation than them.
This is a good offseason to do this, we’ve got a top 2 pick, tons of draft capital, good cap space and not a lot of competition.
