Things to do in Houston this weekend – August 4th – 7th

It's start of Houston Restaurant Week. Go eat at some of Houston's greatest local restaurants for both a good cause and at a great discount. White Linen Night in the Heights is also this weekend. Be safe, have fun!

All Weekend – Lost Illusions screening @ MFAH @ 7PM Check out this new film adaptation of Balzac's epic novel that has earned seven César Awards (French Oscars). In French with English subtitles.

All weekend – Houston Shakespear Festival @ Miller Outdoor Theater King Lear and Cymbeline! Come out and support the arts.

All weekend – Joseph E. Yoakum: What I Saw @ Menil Drawing Institute The exhibition is the first major museum retrospective in more than twenty-five years to focus on the dream-like landscape drawings of Joseph Elmer Yoakum (1891–1972), a self-taught, visionary American artist.

All weekend – Kevin Hart @ Toyota Center @ 7PM ONLY AUG 4 and 5

Ongoing – Leandro Erlich @ MFAH Seeing Is Not Believing features two of Erlich’s most iconic installations: Bâtiment (Façade) and Le cabinet du psy (The Psychoanalyst’s Office). These immersive, room-size environments and a selection of additional works span the career of the acclaimed Argentinean artist, whose psychological subversion of the everyday seems to defy the basic laws of physics while challenging your sense of balance, space, and the absolute.

Ongoing – MC Escher Virtual Realities exhibit @ MFAH – The MFAH hosts the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of works by M.C. Escher ever presented. Virtual Realities features more than 400 prints, drawings, watercolors, printed fabrics, constructed objects, wood and linoleum blocks, lithographic stones, sketchbooks, and the artist’s working tools.

Ongoing – Beauty and Ritual: Judaica from the Jewish Museum, New York @ MFAH The new, ongoing partnership between the MFAH and the Jewish Museum brings exceptional objects to Houston over a period of years. Beauty and Ritual explores the artistic, ritualistic, and cultural significance of more than 140 works.

Ongoing – The Sound of Music @ The George Theater The A.D. Players presents the iconic musical written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, The Sound of Music, at the George Theater in Uptown.

Ongoing – Meret Oppenheim: My Exhibition @ Menil Meret Oppenheim: My Exhibition is the Swiss artist’s first major transatlantic retrospective, and the first in the U.S. in more than twenty-five years.

THURSDAY – AUGUST 4

Cosmic Vibes @ HMNS @ 6PM Modern vibes bring the dome alive in a cosmic light show of edgy three-dimensional full-dome computer-generated experiences. Computer artists create a variety of immersive canvases and movements, from mood-provoking abstract art to theme-based space scenes and transportive tunnels of light.

Rock On! @ HMNS @ 6:30PM Classic rock music set to dazzling full-dome immersive animations in this cosmic light show, featuring RUSH, Led Zepplin, Aerosmith, Hendrix, and Pink Floyd. Let the music and animation surround you. Arrive at least 15 minutes before showtime.
