[Theory] The McNairs knew about Watson’s "escapades," decided to look away when they signed him, and then when Deshaun wanted out, they weaponized the information.
Let me be clear. I am not defending Deshaun Watson. I am also not defending the direction Cal McNair has taken the franchise.
What I am saying, is that it doesn't make sense that these squabbles are not related.
You have to be absolutely obtuse to think that a $3,000,000,000+ franchise would be oblivious to the tendencies of the guy who is in the driver's seat.
Ownership 100% knew that Deshaun Watson liked to cross the line with masseuses, and they were willing to look the other way, until he made a stink and wanted out.
Let's explore:
-So far, the first date in the allegations, that we know of is March 2020, where he started stepping. With most of the details still sealed, it's safe to assume Watson started crossing the line earlier than that, but we can stick with the facts and it still works.
-September 5th, 2020: Watson signs a 4-year, $160MM extension.
–January 2021 Watson asks to get out of Houston.
–March 2021, lawsuits rain down from the sky.
As we know, Tony Buzbee, is the only lawyer carrying these cases. To date, there are not seperate law firms involved.
Back to the theory:
Now, if I am the owner of a very elite an exclusive club of NFL Franchise owners, especially one worth North of 3 Billion Dollars, I am going to want to protect my assets. Do you not think that they spend millions of dollars in insurance? With that said, before signing the face of the franchise to a nine figure contract extention and tying the organization to him for 4 years, that they wouldn't look into his personal life?
Let me ask you, do you think it would have been in their interest to hire a few investigators to look into Watson's personal life, his tendencies, his relationships, his history, his social media, etc? All of that can be done for mere tens of thousands of dollars. Pennies in relation to what they are signing up for. The government does this for a $65k FBI job. Do you think an NFL team (or any major sports team) does't do this for a job that pays hundreds of millions of dollars and can tank an entire franchise for years?
Of course they did. Of course this came out during the exploration phase.
Now, did you know that Tony Buzbee lives next door to the McNairs?
In fact, even though he's flippant about it now, he bragged about it on Twitter a few years ago.
You have to be absolutely blind to think that these guys don't hang out at the country club, let their kids hunt Easter Eggs, and "borrow a cup of sugar" from time to time. It's a small club at that level, especially if you wave at each other every day when you get the mail.
"Why would the McNairs tank Watson's worth by 'sabatoging' him in this way?" you might ask? Watson sabatoged the Texan's for the next few years by in essence trashing the organization, and by proxy having Texan alumni come out against the franchise en masse.
My argument is this: The McNairs aren't stupid. They may be bad at running an NFL franchise, but they know that having a franchise Quarterback is key to being successful. They knew that Watson had at least 22 skeletons in the closet, but they decided to look the other way to secure him and have a chance to win a SuperBowl. A few months later, he threatened to tear it all down and cost the organization their near-term future, and at least tens of millions of dollars, not to mention lost opportunity by not being able to attract talent. So the McNairs, knowing what he does, decided to burn down his future (deservedly if the accusations are true), and handed over his files to their friend and next door neighbor Tony Buzbee.
If this isn't the case, it's almost a worse look against the McNairs for not doing the most basic due dilligence.
