The zoo in August

We’re traveling to Houston in a couple weeks to visit someone at MD Anderson. I have a few young boys and I’m trying to plan some activities to keep them entertained. How is the zoo like during the heat of the summer? Is it worth going or do the animals hide in the shade during the day?
