The Kings of the Short Kings

The Kings of the Short Kings

With his latest HR, José Altuve has tied Hack Wilson for the Major League lead in home runs for a player 5’ 6” or shorter. His total of 244 is two more than every HR hit by every other major league player 5’ 6” and under, since Wilson retired in 1935 !! That’s 90 years of baseball. In that time there have been approximately 205,660 major league games played. Each of those games featured two teams, so 411,320 individual rosters (team games) vs 1907 games for Altuve. The vast majority of those games have not included a player 5’ 6” or shorter, but that’s not Altuve’s fault. We’re simply discussing actual totals vs opportunity. There are players of his stature every year who play professionally and try to work their way up to the majors, it’s a staggering total.
