Despite sitting out most of 2021 because of a wrist injury, defensive stud Peña still appears to be in line to receive a legitimate opportunity to make the Astros’ Opening Day roster — or at least make his major-league debut — next year. The Astros added Peña to their 40-man roster last month, protecting him from being selected in the Rule 5 draft. He has reinforced Houston’s decision in practically every game he has played internationally since then. Peña entered Thursday on a 16-for-48 streak. In his last 15 games, he has three doubles and a triple. He also has stolen four bases in six tries. But he continues to strike out frequently, totaling 15 in that span. Still, Peña, who was the Dominican league’s top rookie last year, has been an important cog for the league-leading Estrellas Orientales.
