Gov. Greg Abbott has said he will sign Senate Bill 14 into law. The ACLU of Texas and other pro-LBGTQ+ organizations vowed to sue the state over the ban.

House Democrats killed a Republican priority bill during late-night debate May 9. Parts of the bill were added to other legislation as amendments, but lawmakers agreed to leave the most contentious provisions out.

Despite a May 8 committee vote, House Bill 2744 missed a key deadline for consideration by the full House. The bill will not become law this session, but families of the Uvalde shooting victims said they will continue advocating for change.

The proposed bill would remove sales tax from period products, infant care and maternity care supplies in an effort to ease some of the financial burden on families who have to purchase the items regularly.

House Bill 2744 is a top priority for the families of the 19 children and two teachers who were killed in Uvalde last May. The bill now heads to the full House.

Senate Bill 14 would prohibit doctors from providing transition-related treatments to minors. The House is expected to debate the bill next week.
