Summary of some inside information I heard (Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon type of deal, so take it for what it’s worth) – and boy, was I wrong.

So I had spoke to several individuals, some of which we all follow on Twitter, and basically this is what was told to me:

  1. Flores was always the top pick, and continues to be. The minute Culley was fired he was the main target, but Flores preferred to be at the Giants and wanted to explore his other options. His lawsuit complicated matters. The other sticking point was the FO wanted some say over his offensive staff due to his history of not being able to keep OCs long term. Flores wanted to pull out of consideration, but the FO believes they can resolve both issues.
  2. Gannon threatened to pull out because he’s being left hanging and has said a decision needs to be made soon or he’s staying where he is. He’s not happy.
  3. This is why most people believe McCown is the guy because both of the Texans top 2 choices want to pull out.
  4. KOC is not actually an option anymore because of his new gig.

So basically my assumption that the FO wouldn’t even consider Flores after the lawsuit was 100% wrong. They still want him, but they can’t seem to work things out and the lawsuit made everything much more complicated. They are actively trying to work with Flores, but in doing so they are upsetting Gannon. Thus, McCown is being left as the clear option since he actually wants the job and is ready to go.

This is also why the Texans said they are “diligently evaluating all their options” and why they haven’t made a decision.

Take it for what it’s worth. And no, I won’t tell you the 3 different people that I talked to that discussed this because they don’t want to – and I quote “don’t want to have problems asking questions because of their credentials”.

Like I said, take it with a grain of salt. Just trying to give you the information I heard since I know we’re all on eggshells waiting for the announcement.
