Sugarland is a significantly better place compared to Houston for young South Asians, change my view?
It seems as if anything tailored for the South Asian community, including for young adults, is based in Sugarland or that region.
You have many different lounges, cafes, etc. that aren’t present in the city (the city has lounges obviously, but they are bars/alcohol based which won’t have many patrons from a good chunk of the south Asian community) , and it seems as if every week there is a new spot opening on highway 6 or the area. On the other hand, there is seldom any areas opening up in the city. There’s Hillcroft, but that area has largely plateaued.
It is definitely annoying for South Asians living in Houston, as you will have to drive to Sugarland to socialize. A single round trip to Sugarland puts as many miles as 3-4 days round trip commute in the city, that is just an insane amount of fuel, wear and tear. I know a few other South Asian friends who live in Houston (including West University) that complain about this, as many of the younger South Asians are from – and thus only hang in Sugarland, and absolutely refuse to step foot in the city other than for work/school. Many other events/activities for young adults are also held in that area that you won’t find in Houston. The great part about living in Houston is that you are not in a monotonous culture, diversity is its strength – but sometimes you wonder where are the other folks of your background? It is isolating from that point of view.
So I am just asking, is this just my bubble or is it a wider phenomenon?
