Stats I DNK until last night.
Pitching box score tells story better than I can:
(H=hold, BS= blown save)
Stanek H Montero BS Neris H Pressly. BS Martinez L. (but no BS).
Before I looked at the rules (some official, some not),I was scratching my head thinking that Martinez could have been hit with 3 BSs (12th, 13th and 14th), plus the L.
Whereas rules for W, L and S (save) are codified in MLB rules, BS and H are not official MLB stats, and their rules seem to have developed through some loose understanding between the “industry” and sportswriters.
Seems like they shake out like this:
Multiple Hs and BSs are ok (we see them frequently). BS/W and BS/L are common.
Q#1. Why didn’t Martinez earn a BS with his L? IDK.
Q#2. Why didn’t Martinez earn 3 BSs? Answer could be: (a) he entered game tied 5-5, which is not a S opp, and create the S opp for himself, or (b) multi BSs cannot be charged to 1 pitcher***.
Q#3. Can one pitcher earn >1 H in 1 game? Probably not, unless***.
Q#4. What about 1pitcher earning crazy combos, like H/L or BS/S? No, unless***.
***I think Ohtani could do these things, if he pitched, then left mound (but not game) to play another position, then later returned to mound.
My head is spinning.
