Star Stop card reader skimmers

Hey y’all, just wanted to post a quick anecdote and reminder to continue being aware of card readers and skimmers in the area.

Specifically, gas stations as we all know. I have been living in Houston my entire life and have previously never had an issue with my debit card info being stolen. However, on 10/13 my credit union alerted me to some fraudulent charges on my debit card although the card was still in my possession. While frustrating, I walked into the bank and got a new card that same day. This morning I had the same issue, fraudulent charges on an online shopping site out of state that were flagged and declined by my credit union.

The only similarity in these two instances is that I made a purchase INSIDE my local Star Stop the day before. Within the past two weeks, I haven’t shopped online on any shady sites or stored my card info elsewhere online that isn’t reputable or verified.

I tried to contact this specific gas station and the phone number listed was the corporate number. Corporate said that this particular location wasn’t even listed as active on their website, that it still said “coming soon” so they couldn’t give me any solid help. I plan on visiting the gas station after work today to let them know what is happening in case other customers have said anything. I’m curious if anyone else has had recent issues with card readers inside gas stations? I typically don’t use my debit card at the pump for this very reason.
