Something to keep an eye on!
I recently ran into a [mlb trade rumors article](htpps://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/12/d-backs-outfielders-drawing-widespread-trade-interest.html) about the Astros being involved in discussions with the Diamondbacks about their outfielders.
I believe we are looking into Daulton Varsho. I’ve been mile high on this guy since 2019 and he finally had a mini breakout season last year hitting .235/.302/.443 with 27 home runs and 74 rbi.
Reasons why:
-
He can catch. Although it looks like he’ll be playing more outfield going forward, he could definitely spot start for maldy on a consistent basis. He played 31 games behind the dish last season.
-
He’s controllable. He’s not eligible for free agency until after the 2026 season. Yes I’m aware this will drive his price up but it’s worth it in my eyes.
-
He can play center and was a gold glove finalist in right field. He played 54 games in center compared to 71 in right. The snakes field is huge, if he can competently patrol their outfield, I trust him in ours.
-
He’s a lefty. Lord knows we need some left handed diversification injected into our lineup. Varsho would be a great addition to our order by contributing pop from the left side that’s only gotten stronger in his 2 full seasons in the mlb.
-
He’s fast for his size and extremely athletic. He’s 5 feet 10 inches of pure granite. He stole 16 bags in 2022 and could easily develop into another gold glove, 30-20 guy in our outfield.
Let’s go get daulton varsho.
Oh yeah I forgot. He has a sick last name.
Edit – sorry the article didn’t link right and now there’s some random dbacks player attached to this post forever. It’s the top post under Astros on the mlbtr app.
