Someone help settle this debate regarding license plates…

My friend claims Texas does not require having license plates on the front of car, only the back. I have always known that you need on both sides and a Google search seems to back this up.

However she has yet to get in trouble for this after 7 years or so, and I have seen many cars driving around without the front plate.

So which is it…?
