Since someone asked me to make an post about how we’re affected by the latest Texans news, so here ya go
So we’re up to 24 cases as of now, Buzbee has already said to expect more cases soon. A 25th could be expected as early as next week.
Buzbee said he was going to add the Houston Texans as a defendant to the cases, but he didn’t specify how many. His claim isn’t just that the Texans knew and failed to protect the victims involved by keeping it quiet, but that even if we didn’t know we should have – basically willful ignorance. However, he still hasn’t added us as to any yet.
Some people are worried about what disciplinary actions we could face. The bottom line is that the trade is the trade. No, even if it turns out that the front office was aware of his actions (and I don’t believe they were at all) and tried to protect him (again, I don’t believe that they did) we would just get a monetary fine. So even if the worst was true, it wasn’t something that directly affected the product on the field so – no, we wouldn’t lose any draft picks.
Some people were curious if the Texans knew and didn’t disclose that information to the Browns or the NFL, would the NFL try to negate the trade. Again, the answer is no. Almost everything except for a few details was already known. The trade happened after 22 civil suits and 10 criminal cases were filed. There was always the risk of his situation getting worse. There was nothing to disclose. Secondly, it’s impossible to negate the trade since we literally used some of the picks already so it would just be a logistical nightmare.
Parity is important in the NFL, so the NFL could award the Browns a 3rd round compensatory pick. Since no one really knows the formula involved that’s what they could do if they wanted to compensate the Browns at all, but again we’re not losing any picks.
Also to clarify, Watson isn’t the only one that has access to the Houstonian suite, their spa and their gym. It was a perk that the Texans give to players and executives.
The NDA that was provided by the head of security isn’t all that uncommon because the team may not want to risk a leak about a particular injury.
But the optics look bad: it looks like we gave him legal assistance to fight the victims and provided the place he took 7 of his victims to.
Right now the likely scenario that some pundits, including Florio are predicting is Watson being placed on the exempt list until his court cases are settled, and then a whole year suspension. The cases could take over a year and possibly up to 2 years to go through court – or it could pressure Watson to settle (which is more likely, if the women agree).
And obviously the more time Watson is off the field, the better we draft. Plus…karma.
