Shooting range for someone visiting the US

I'll be visiting the US in December (from Germany) and I'm currently filling up my schedule. I still have one day to fill in Houston, so I was thinking that I can't go to Texas and not try shooting.

So I'm looking for a gun range that is welcoming to first timers. I have never shot with 'real' guns before (only air rifles when I was a kid). I'll be staying the downtown area. I don't care about indoors or outdoors (although it would be a shame if it was closed because of the weather if they do that), and I'm looking for a fun experience but I'm less interested in some tourist gimmicky thing. I like learning and I'd like to make the most out of the time I have there.

Also I assume that this will not fill up the whole day, so any other suggestions for things to do are welcome (other than the space center; already planned a visit).
