Sale of White Oak Bayou
|
Houston City Council will vote Wednesday, May 22nd on selling a portion of White Oak Bayou Greenway to TxDOT for highway expansion. This would effectively ruin the southern portion of the greenway and potentially block access to downtown for walkers and cyclists for years. Please write every city council member to stop this sale! Tell them to vote NO on Ordinance 54 authorizing the sale of this land to TxDOT. Tell them: White Oak Bayou is the most used greenway in the parks system. The Greenway serves a vital role in the health and well-being of the Northside, Greater Heights, Downtown and Washington Avenue neighborhoods, many of which are underserved by parks. The greenway provides vital habitat to local wildlife, including resident and migratory birds. In 2012, with a 68% majority, Houston voters passed a $166 million bond to fund city parks. $100 million was earmarked for Bayou Greenways 2020. Parks and bayou greenways have broad community support. Preserving White Oak Bayou, and investing in it more as a city park to create a place that is livable for people and wildlife, would be the most beneficial long-term choice for Houston. submitted by /u/Empalagante |
